There’s been another stabbing in Stoke Newington. And, once more, it has gone under-reported in the media. The BBC London report consisted of just a few paragraphs based solely on the police press release, saying that a 19-year-old man died in Yoakley Road on Thursday night. A more detailed story appeared in the Evening Standard, which named the victim as Michael McCarthy, and said he thought he was a potential target in recent weeks. The London Daily News website highlighted recent clashes between two local gangs, the Holly Street Boys and the DNA Boys, but the Standard reported friends of McCarthy saying he wasn’t involved in gangs. Whatever the real story, we can’t ignore the fact that young men are dying in violent circumstances in our area – and no-one seems to know what to do about it. continue reading »
