I said I’d write up a post about the council elections in Hackney, which are being held on the same day as the general election, May 6. Local government politics are notoriously arcane – and others follow the fine detail more closely than me. Still, here goes. And of you were depressed about learning how little your vote counted in the national poll, then there is some good news: although the electoral system is the same, the contest in many Hackney wards is close.

The first thing to say about last night’s Stoke Newington neighbourhood forum is that it wasn’t in Stoke Newington. Instead, for reasons known only to Hackney council, which organises these events, it was in a draughty church hall in deepest Dalston. continue reading »

Transport for London is consulting on a new bus route that would connect Clapton with Dalson. It’s actually an extension to the 488, and it would run from the Lea Bridge roundabout, along Kenninghall Road, down Rendlesham Road, and on through Shacklewell to Dalson. The upside is that it would give a direct link from Clapton to the new Dalston Junction station without going through Hackney; the downside is that the proposed route runs past two neighbouring primary schools, along roads that are clogged during the school run.
